I am writing this in solidarity for Ghulam Ali Sahab, not just perhaps the best ghazal singer in the subcontinent but a wonderful human being as well.
I was on a Jet Airways evening flight from New Delhi to Kolkata on 9th August 1997. I had just settled into my J-Class Window seat when the stewardess guided in a very familiar looking gentleman in white kurta-pajama to the seat next to me. I was elated the next moment when I recognized him...and with a little hesitation extended my hand and introduced myself. He shook my hand warmly and introduced himself, I am Ghulam Ali, a gazal singer.....such is the humility of this great man...and for the entire duration of the flight, I enjoyed his gracious company...he signed for me his name and address in the Richard Bach book "One" I had in my hand...one of my most precious possessions..
That Shiv Sena now wants to *ban* his concert is just another indicator of the nadir we have hit as a nation held to ransom by thugs and extremists.
